Chapter Thirteen

Cowboy

What the fuck am I doing? What am I doing with her? I shouldn’t be doing this, but I am. I’m claiming her whether she likes it or not. I don’t care if she says no.

“You’re delusional, Ryan!” Ruby snaps at me. I laugh it off because maybe I am. On the other hand, maybe I’m just that fucked up in the head.

“If that’s how you feel. Come downstairs; we’re eatin’.”

“People were just shot! Are you fucking kidding me right now?” Ruby shouts in disbelief.

“I’m not kiddin’ you, and you’re gonna come down and eat before it’s time for bed.”

“I’m not doing anything,” Ruby crosses her arms over her chest. I pull my cell out and dial Shade to come and deal with her ass. I have enough on my plate with Bell now.

“Just do what he says, Ruby,” Bell says quietly.

“Finally, someone that can listen,” I hiss.

“Oh, the only reason she’s listening is because she wants to be fucked later. I, on the other hand, don’t need to be so fuck you, Ryan. I can’t believe this is the kind of shit you’re involved in.”

“Believe it, sis. This is my goddamn life. I tried to keep you out of it, but you were bound and determined to get your ass in here. Now you’re here. Fuckin’ deal with it.”

“You can’t force this on me, Ryan. I don’t want this life.”

“You did it to yourself. I kept you away.”

“Fuck. Just fuck,” Ruby mutters before lowering her head. I walk over and lift her chin so that she’s looking at me.

“I didn’t want this for you, but the fact is you’re here. There’s nothin’ I can do to change that now.”

“I’m sorry, Ryan. So fucking sorry,” she sobs before wrapping her arms around my waist and resting her head on my chest. I hold her, letting her cry for a minute.

“It’s not your fault. We think those guys were comin’ for us before you two went there anyway. I just want to keep you safe until we figure it out for sure.”

“Okay. I’ll do whatever you say.”

“Good. Let’s go down and eat. Then we’ll talk more.” Ruby nods her head and wipes her eyes before grabbing Bell’s hand. Shade comes through the door just as we begin to walk toward it.

“You needed me?”

“You called him to help you?” Bell asks with a little laugh.

“She didn’t want to follow the rules. I think she’s got it now,” I answer him, nodding toward my sister. Shade’s gaze falls on Ruby before he shakes his head and runs his hand through his hair.

“Foods here. Come eat.” I nod my head and usher everyone out of my room before I walk over and run my finger over the bullet hole in the wall. It makes me sick to my fucking stomach to think that either one of them could have been hurt or worse.

“Fuck,” I grumble under my breath. I turn and head for the door thanking God that they were safe.

I’m down the stairs and at the bar as the other girls serve the food.
